Local, New York-based shippers team up to boost cargo services

Harold Smith is one of a succession of Guyanese whose names are linked to the international shipping industry. His company, the New York-based Sunshine International Shipper is currently in its fourth year, though his own association with the industry predates the creation of that company.

Much earlier, Smith had worked with the Customs and Excise Department in Guyana then left the country in 1969 with the intention of studying then returning home. The latter part of that plan remains unfulfilled. A first degree in Economics and a subsequent MBA were, it seems, enough to persuade him to contemplate a business of his own. That was not how it went in the beginning, however. During the late 1970s and 1980s he worked
