Number of HIV-infected babies born in Latin America/Caribbean down by 78%

The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has said that the number of babies born with HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean declined by 78% between 2001 and 2013.

These findings were published in a new report from the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The report, titled ‘Elimination of Mother-to-Child Trans-mission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis in the Americas’ takes stock of progress in the Region’s countries toward the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, a statement from PAHO said.
