Kastev family robbed of $2m after break-in

Passports and other documents scattered on the floor

A family at Kastev, Meten-Meer-Zorg suffered $2M in losses when bandits broke into their house between 10 and 11:30 pm on Saturday and stole local and foreign currency and gold jewellery.

Geeta Nadiram told Stabroek News yesterday that the bandits ransacked the West Coast Demerara house and also carted off iPhones and four iPads.

Two women who do part-time domestic work at the house have been taken into police custody for questioning.

At the time, Nadiram, her daughter, Loriza Nagredi who is visiting from Canada and relatives from Wakenaam were away at a wedding house at Tuschen.

The police at Leonora were contacted and a female rank responded that the police were out on a patrol in response to a noise nuisance report.

After realizing that there was no vehicle at the station, relatives went to bring a policeman but returned without any. They kept calling the station but were getting excuses from the rank on duty.

They then contacted an ‘influential’ resident who was in Georgetown at the time. He arrived at the scene after receiving the call and the police had still not responded to the report.

He then called the station to inquire why the police were taking so long and told the officer that if no rank showed up he would contact the Commissioner of Police directly.

In about half hour, the ranks arrived and conducted investigations. They returned subsequently and dusted for fingerprints.

Nadiram said the bandits gained access to the house by removing two louvre panes from a bedroom window and bolted the door during the act. They apparently escaped via the same
