Thirty-two women this past week benefited from an elderly care workshop conducted at the Palms Geriatric Institution, under the patronage of First Lady Sandra Granger.
The workshop, described as a “self-reliance and empowerment initiative,” provided 35 hours of practical and theoretical training to the participants, who hailed from as far as Mahaica, Berbice and Grove, East Bank Demerara.
Colonel Yvonne Smith, representative of the Office of the First Lady, yesterday said that the aim of the initiative was to equip the participants with knowledge in caring for the elderly, and shared that there were plans to host a first aid programme that will provide them with additional skills to make them certified caregivers.
Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence, in her address, expressed her desire to see similar programmes being implemented across the length and breadth of the country.
