Labourer gets community service for stealing from boss

A labourer was yesterday sentenced to do four months community service for stealing his boss’s money.

Godfrey David, 20, of 3½ Miles Bartica, Potaro, who admitted to stealing the money to buy a chair set, will have to serve six months in prison if he does not perform the community service, which was ordered by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

David pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him by the Chief Magistrate.

The charge stated that David stole $168,000 from the home of Nazir Latifan on March 11, 2016 at Fourth Avenue, Bartica, Essequibo River.

Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that David was an employee of Latifan for over a year at his home at Bartica. He said on the day in question, Latifan had put his money in his bedroom and returned about two hours later to find that it was gone. He then confronted David and questioned him about the missing money. The money was later found in David’s possession and he and the money were subsequently handed over to the police, the prosecutor told the court.

David, when given a chance to tell the court why he took the money, said that he needed the money to buy a chair set.

Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently reprimanded David for stealing from his boss and sentenced him to do community service.
