After reading of a pensioner having fainted at the Blairmont Post Office after waiting in the hot sun, a former resident of the area, Nowrang Persaud decided to build a shed so that the elderly would be sheltered when they went to collect their pension. The photo above which was supplied by Persaud shows the extension.
Persaud said he was born on the Corentyne and grew up in Blairmont “so while I am a Guyanese and my heart bleeds for Guyana, my soul beats for West Berbice”.
He said he contacted Karen Brown, the Head of the Postal Services, prepared the necessary Building Plan and secured all the necessary approvals to proceed with the construction of this shed. Since he wanted the shed in place before the next pension day there was no time for fund-raising and Persaud said he financed the shed from his own resources to the tune of $400,000.
Painting still has to be done and toilet facilities installed. He said he would welcome monetary donations from the public for painting the shed and other expenses. He thanked the Postal authorities for affording him the opportunity to be of service to the senior citizens.
