Dress code protest

Led by human rights activist Sherlina Nageer, a small group yesterday staged a protest outside of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts complex against the enforcement of dress codes at public buildings. According to Nageer, the protest was meant to urge public entities to become progressive and get rid of dress codes. Another protester said he believes that since we are no longer under colonial rule, we should not continue to hold on to the beliefs of colonialism. Some of the buildings that the protesters would have visited include the Lands Registry, the Office of the First Lady, and the National Library. Last week, GRA Board Chairman Rawle Lucas, in light of recent complaints about the agency’s strict dress code, announced that it would be relaxing its enforcement. Additionally, President David Granger publicly voiced his disagreement with some of the “backward” dress code requirements and said that government offices should be emphasising service to the public.
