A firefighter spraying water around the city’s incinerator on Princes Street, Georgetown on Thursday, after the fire service was summoned. The thick black smoke that billowed from the incinerator caused panic among some residents, who thought that a building was on fire. Stabroek News was told that the smoke was as a result of staff of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) burning banned Styrofoam food boxes that were seized from a container. However, the fire quickly got out of control and started to spread along the ground and the Guyana Fire Service was summoned to control it. Scores of residents gathered around the facility after they spotted the smoke. The fire service responded quickly and was able to get the fire under control. GRA and EPA workers refused to say anything about the exercise.
