Plumbing the depths: Scores of persons gathered around the canal along Avenue of the Republic on Thursday after the police used a homeless man to search the waterway for a gun. According to an eyewitness, the police arrested a man in an eating establishment after he was making a commotion. As they were walking south along Avenue of the Republic, a scuffle ensued between the man and the two police officers after which he jumped over the rail and into the canal. He was intercepted after he tried to swim across the canal by other police officers.

However, the police received information that the man had thrown a gun in the water and subsequently had the homeless man searching for it. As the man searched the canal, the suspect was on the road in handcuffs insisting that he did not have a gun and only ran from the police because he knew he was going to be locked up and didn’t have any money to bail himself out. The homeless man was unable to find anything after approximately 30 minutes of searching. The suspect was then taken to the Brickdam Police Station.
