A Pomeroon boat captain who was placed on $50,000 bail after he denied fraudulently converting more than $1 million in items that he was supposed to keep safe for his employer was charged for theft of the items yesterday at a city court.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers withdrew the charge of fraudulent conversion laid against Terrence Hoppie and substituted a charge of simple larceny. It is alleged that Hoppie, 38, of Martindale, Pomeroon, Essequibo, on January 27, at Georgetown, stole a GPS, a compass, two gas bottles with gas and 800 pounds of seine valued at $950,000, from Corwin Van Sertima, the owner of the boat he operates. The items carried a total value of $1,152,000.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who allowed the substitution of the charge, placed Hoppie on $50,000 bail. His matter was adjourned May 27.
