Guyana’s Howard Bovell lifted his way to a bronze medal in the men’s (75-79 years) 77kg weight class at the World Masters Games held in Auckland, New Zealand.

The lone representative for the Golden Arrowhead secured the podium spot with a combined total of 91kg behind Boris Didendko of Russia with 122kg and Piotr Kowalewski of Poland with 148kg.

According to a release from the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA), the USA based Guyanese lifted with a groin injury sustained just a few days before the games, but was still able to do the nation proud, despite the injury and not having any of his other team mates for support.

The locally based athletes were unable to attend due to a lack of funding. The GAWA had named a four member team to represent Guyana at the Games back in February, however, only Bovell was successful in attending.
