Government action in respect of Red House is vindictive

Dear Editor,

There is no doubt that Red House is the property of the people of Guyana. The Government of Guyana (GoG) is simply the custodian of the public commons. Given that the Granger administration campaigned on the alleged excesses of the previous administration, one would expect that efforts would be made in the direction of addressing significant excesses. That being said, the action of the GoG with respect to the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre and its occupancy of Red House is vindictive. What is so morally wrong about the state and an NGO curating the history of an important and significant individual in Guyana’s life? Even if one is to accept the government’s allegations as it pertains to the lease and use of this property, this is not a wrong that is so reprehensible and pressing that it needs such a course correction. This is an attack on someone who is revered by a significant segment of the population. Apparently, change is all about the same and settling scores.

Yours faithfully,

Kowlasar Misir
