West Berbice accident leaves Bath pedestrian dead

A pedestrian is now dead after being struck by a car along the Plantation Hope road in Bath Village, West Coast Berbice on Friday night.

Vishnu Deonarine, 50, of Plantation Hope, was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accident occurred around 9.10 pm, when the car, PSS 918, which was proceeding east along the northern side of the public road, allegedly at a fast rate, hit the man.

The driver, who hails from East Canje, Berbice, has since told investigators that the accident was as a result of him being blinded by oncoming lights from another vehicle.

He was placed under arrest, while his vehicle was impounded at the Fort Wellington Police Station. The driver was also administered a breathalyser test, which did not detect any alcohol content in his breath.

Deonarine reportedly lived alone and worked as a labourer for residents in his community.
