A traffic officer attached to the Guyana Police Force was attacked yesterday afternoon after he attempted to arrest a minibus driver at the corner of Camp and Robb streets, Georgetown.

During the minutes-long ordeal, which unfolded around 4pm, Constable Samuels sustained minor injuries about his body.

The constable related to Stabroek News that he was on duty when he spotted the minibus driver proceeding along Robb Street. He said he attempted to arrest the minibus driver, for whom a warrant was issued some time ago for obstruction of traffic.

However, during the process, the driver exited the minibus and allegedly began to hit the policeman about his body. He was later joined by passengers of the minibus.

Public-spirited citizens pleaded with the driver and passengers to let go of the officer. They eventually took the minibus driver to a nearby store in an effort to calm him down but he subsequently fled.

The matter is currently being investigated by the police.
