Agricola man gets six months jail for threatening to kill father

A man was sentenced to jail yesterday after he pleaded guilty to threatening his father over money.

Pooran Downarine appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced to six months in prison by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, after admitting that on July 5, at 66 Benn Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, he threatened his father, Pooran Downarine senior, after the man would not give him money to buy cigarettes.

In addition to the threat, it was alleged that he broke six window panes of the house belonging to Downarine senior.  He pleaded guilty with explanation to both charges but when asked for the explanation, he said he had none. He later said, “I want to work but he ain’t want me to work”. His father objected and said it is the son who does not want to work and keeps harassing him for money.
