An unoccupied house at 27 Shoppers Lane, West Ruimveldt was last evening destroyed by a fire of unknown origin.
At approximately 8 pm the two-storey building belonging to Stephen Clark was engulfed in flames and though the Fire Service which is located one street away arrived swiftly the entire wooden top flat was destroyed.
Fire Officers once on site worked successfully to prevent the blaze from spreading to other buildings in the vicinity.
According to 60-year-old Clarke, the house did not have electricity and no candle nor lamp had been left burning. He explained that though he had inherited the house from relatives he was not living there as he currently lives and works at the Demerara Ice Company which is a street away from the property.
He regularly checked on the property and claimed to have received several threats of arson from persons who wanted the property.
