Sputnik V vaccine approval by WHO still months away

The Kremlin is convinced that the World Health Organization (WHO) will recognise Russia’s flagship Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine within a few months, the Interfax news agency cited Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying yesterday.

Guyanese had been assured for months by the Health Ministry that Sputnik V would be approved before the end of the year but this is no longer possible. Those fully vaccinated with Sputnik V will not be able to travel to the US, Canada or the UK unless they are re-vaccinated with a WHO-approved vaccine. Sputnik V has been described as the backbone of the Guyana vaccination programme though in recent months several more vaccines have been utilised here including the WHO-recognised Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson.
