Gov’t to fund construction of buildings for call centres

With the aim of creating 1,500 jobs by 2023, government will be investing in the construction of two buildings to house call centres, Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh announced on Wednesday.

Singh, during his 2022 budget presentation to the National Assembly, said the growth of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has created approximately 1,131 jobs between August 2020 and the end of 2021.

Within the last year, he noted, government has partnered with a private operator and reopened a call centre in Linden that now provides 125 persons with jobs. It is anticipated that a further 100 persons will be employed there by June of this year.
