Guyana looks to improve rank, gain titles at Olympiad

Guyana’s Olympiad chess team along with officials of the Guyana Chess Federation paid a courtesy call on President Irfaan Ali and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Charles Ramson at State House recently. Also present were FIDE’s Disciplinary Commission Councillor Yolander Sammy (a Guyanese) and President of the Guyana Deaf Association Sabine Macintosh. Guyana’s woman reserve player Anaya Lall is hearing impaired. At the meeting, President Ali pledged to support the expansion of chess across Guyana.

Americn chess master I A Horowitz, commenting on Bobby Fischer’s self-confidence in the New York Times prior to the Spassky-Fischer world championship chess match in 1972, was quoted as saying: “..confidence wins games. Allied to the will to win, it sparks the mental ignition, brings forth ideas, dispels doubts, and promotes clear thinking.”
