Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives today elected Hakeem Jeffries to serve as their leader beginning in January, replacing Nancy Pelosi who has long been at the helm of the caucus, Reuters reported.

With his election, Jeffries becomes the first Black American to hold a top leadership position in the House or Senate.

The Guyana Government has criticised Jeffries for positions that he has taken on domestic matters. Jeffries did not respond to an invitation to meet with President Irfaan Ali in Washington earlier this year.
