New Amsterdam hit and run leaves one dead, another seriously injured

A hit and run along Main Road in New Amsterdam last evening has left a 19-year-old Corentyne lad dead and an 18-year-old female injured.

 

Dead is Vishan Ramphal, 19, of Lot 5 Belvedere, Corentyne. The pillion rider, Renita Premchand, 18, of Williamsburg, Corentyne, has since been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. She sustained a broken right leg and arm.

 

The accident reportedly happened minutes after midnight, this newspaper was told.

 

According to information gathered, the two were on motorcycle CJ 4962 riding along Main Road, New Amsterdam about to exit the town when they were struck by a speeding motorcar. 

 

Stabroek News was told, that as a result of the collision, Ramphal and Premchand were flung into the air and subsequently hit the concrete block of the New Amsterdam arch, causing them to suffer serious injuries about their bodies.

 

They were both picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited persons and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

 

Ramphal was pronounced dead on arrival. 

 

An investigation has since been launched into the accident.
