Tradewinds military exercises underway

Members of the media were yesterday hosted as airborne operations training continued at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Air Station London (Air Corps), Timehri as part of the US-led Exercise Tradewinds. A release from the GDF said that during the exercise, Special Forces units from several countries, including Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, St Lucia, and The Bahamas were engaged in training exercises related to airborne operations. Specifically, they have been focusing on the Fast Rope Insertion and Extraction System (FRIES) which allows soldiers to rapidly infiltrate an area from a helicopter and is particularly useful when a helicopter cannot land. The release said that ranks descended from a United States UA 60 helicopter, using ropes at heights ranging from 10 to 15 feet. Among them were only two females, Woman Marine Kameisha Brown of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Constable Rubinia Joseph of the Special Services Unit of the Saint Lucia Police Force. (GDF photo)
