GGDMA cites labour competition among reasons for slump in gold declarations

Expressing concern about falling gold declarations, the miners association yesterday cited a number of reasons including competition for labour and it also called on the government to step up efforts to stop smuggling of the precious metal.

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) in a strongly worded statement noted the recent drop in gold declaration figures from the small and medium scale miners. This, it said,  should be expected as the industry has been affected by several factors including the ongoing competition for labour, “driven by the explosion in construction and job opportunities in the oil and gas sector”.  The GGDMA statement would be the latest expression of concern that the oil and gas sector is continuing its expansion at the expense of traditional sectors,
