Alex Leung and Savannah Hyles were the first cyclists to claim gold medals when action in the 61st edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming, and Track and Field Championships got underway yesterday morning.

The pair earned the spoils of the Open Boys (40km) and Girls (25km) road races staged on the outer circuit of the National Park.

Racing just against the clock, Leung of District 11 clocked a brisk 1:06:82s in his event despite the inclement weather. The 15-year-old who attends Christchurch Secondary School has displayed sublime form on the saddle throughout the season and continues to grab the headlines and add to his palmares.
