T&T activist slams ‘anti-woman’ chutney lyrics

(Trinidad Express) Anti-woman and anti-family sentiment is now so pervasive that it is apparent in local culture, said Dr Indira Rampersad.

The remarks were made at the Network of NGOs’ (non-government organisations) annual tea and fund-raiser at Capital Plaza on Wrightson Road, Port of Spain on Saturday.

Rampersad said music was an apparent host of this disease and called out songs by local chutney performers Kris “KI” Persad and Raymond Ramnarine, with “Single Forever” and “I eh marridin no more” as examples.

The lyrics were symptomatic of the emasculated male in society who no longer feels on the same level as the educated professional woman, Rampersad said.

Latest statistics showed women to outnumber men in the tertiary education system, she said.

This is despite the fact that boys outnumber girls in the primary and secondary system.

And the new power being shown by women is one of the reasons behind domestic violence, she stated.

Saturday’s fund-raiser was part of the Network’s series of activities to mark International Women’s Day 2013, which was celebrated on Friday.
