Murdered T&T man was suspect in his mother’s killing

(Trinidad Express) Amid information that Jason Nero, 30, was the suspect behind the murder of his 52-year-old mother, Patricia Spinks, last week, the two were buried together following a joint funeral service in Longdenville yesterday.

“If he did wrong, if he really did what they said he did, you would think that I would not bury him with his mother. But if he really did love his mother, and she of course loved her son, then of course I will have them buried together,” explained Pastor Carol Castle as she officiated over the funeral service for the two slain relatives at the St Joseph Spiritual Baptist Full Gospel Church, Old Longdenville Road, Longdenville.

Pastor Castle emphasised that she was not saying that Nero had indeed killed his mother, but, she noted that her 52-year-old friend had told her about the troubles she had with her son at home, and how she planned on evicting him as a means of “tough love” in an attempt to get him to turn his life around.

“Do you know the Friday before she was killed, she called me and said, ‘they gonna kill me you know’ I asked her why she was talking like that and that no one was going to harm her. But lo and behold look what happened. Even though she was blind, she could see what was going on around her, she had an insight into what was happening.

“The Scripture tells us a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household, something which is terribly true. Pat loved her children and grandchildren, and was always there for them. Sometimes, unwittingly children of all ages don’t understand what they are doing is wrong and they may take advantage of kindness. And in an attempt to stand her ground, she tried to institute a “tough love” stance. Do better with your life, or get out. Now I’m not saying her son killed her you know, I am just acknowledging that prior to her death, she had problems in her house,” Pastor Castle said.

The pastor recalled that Spinks loved to dance and loved to sing, and was always serenading persons in the church and in her home with whatever “catchy tune” she had recently heard.  She also recalled that Spinx was a practicing member of the church, and never missed a service, rain or shine, and was always taking her children and grandchildren with her in an attempt to bring her family closer to God.

However, during her service, pastor Castle called on all parents in this country not to tolerate wrong doings in their homes.

“If you are a mom or a dad and your son has a gun in the home, report it to the police! Some might ask you what kind of parent you are, but honestly you are being the best parent you can be for them, because you don’t know why they have it, and if they plan to use it, or worst case scenario, you never know if he will turn the gun on you! Report it! You have a duty!” the pastor said.

Nero was shot and killed by unknown gunmen outside his home at La Solita Road, Kelly Village, on October 5.

Just two days prior, the bullet riddled body of his mother was found in her bedroom of the same home.

No one has been held for either incident, however, police investigators had received information that Nero was linked to the death of his mother, and his killing was a result of villagers in the area who took the law into their own hands.

Senior Superintendent Johnny Abraham confirmed this information, noting that while police were pursuing inquiries in that direction, the information was not evidence that the 30-year-old was responsible for his mother’s death.
