(Trinidad Express) A Guyanese national, an illegal immigrant, will spend the next two years in jail for stealing from the man who hired him to work as a mason at his home.
Gowkarran Rankin, 23, took his employer’s refrigerator, microwave and tools altogether worth over $3,000.
He admitted in court last Thursday that he loaded the items on a van and carried them to his Princes Town home.
Constable Jason Dailey of Gasparillo Police Station investigated the report and went to Rankin’s Princes Town home where he was shown the electrical items. Rankin admitted he took them from his boss’s house.
“Why did you steal from a man who opened his place to you and gave you employment?” acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan asked.
Rankin said it “just happen”.
Police prosecutor Ramdath Phillip said Rankin’s previous convictions showed he had been fined TT$600 last August for possession of marijuana. Phillip also said Rankin was in this country illegally.
Rankin admitted that he has been in Trinidad and Tobago since 2008.
Rambachan sentenced Rankin to two years in prison with hard labour.
