Venice devastated by second highest tide in history

VENICE, Italy, (Reuters) – Venice’s mayor called the city a disaster zone today after the second highest tide ever recorded swept through it overnight, flooding its historic basilica and leaving many squares and alleyways deep under water.

Supreme Court leans toward Trump on ending ‘Dreamers’ immigrant programme

WASHINGTON,  (Reuters) – The Supreme Court’s conservative majority signaled support on Tuesday for President Donald Trump’s bid to kill a programme that protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants – dubbed “Dreamers” – who entered the United States illegally as children, even as liberal justices complained that the move would destroy lives.

Lula leaves prison, firing up Brazil’s left and right

BRASILIA/CURITIBA, Brazil,  (Reuters) – Brazil’s leftist former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva left prison today after a judge ordered his release, startling financial markets and reigniting both ends of the political spectrum with calls for demonstrations in coming days.

Big Oil stuns Brazil in back-to-back auction flops

RIO DE JANEIRO,  (Reuters) – Major global oil firms snubbed a second Brazilian oil auction in a row today, passing up promising offshore blocks and forcing officials to reconsider a bidding system that gives a privileged position to state-run Petroleo Brasileiro SA.
