Rupununi villagers boycott, protest mining lottery

Residents of several Deep South Rupununi, Region Nine villages yesterday staged a protest at Lethem after boycotting the Guyana Geology and Mines Commis-sion (GGMC) land lottery and vowed to move to the courts to block the allocations.

Rupununi gold miners, at the centre of controversy over illegal operations at Marudi,  will have to wait a bit longer on a mining parcels allocation lottery, even as negotiations continue between the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and the group.

Some of the miners being evicted from Marudi Mountain, in Region Nine, have payment orders for selling raw gold to the Guyana Gold Board, challenging a claim by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) that none of them had declared a single gramme of gold and that there were no records of production.

Georgetown Chamber slams textbook piracy
