Man to stand trial for murder of brother

Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court yesterday committed a man accused of murdering his brother in 2005 to stand trial for the capital offence in the High Court.

Rambarran Singh is accused of murdering his brother Mahadeo Singh called ‘Shanta Ram’ on March 22, 2005 at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara.

The prosecution had last year closed its case contending that there was enough evidence for the man to be committed to stand trial for the offence.

The defence led by Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos had initially decided to call a witness then said that the witness would be reserved for the High Court.

The magistrate said yesterday that after reviewing all the evidence he had determined that a prima facie case had been made out and committed Singh to stand trial for the offence during the April Assizes of the High Court.
