The School of Education and Humanities at the University of Guyana is hosting a lecture on the history of West Indies cricket from today at the National Library.
According to a press release, History professor and occupant of the Walter Rodney Chair, Dr Winston McGowan, will be making the presentation. McGowan has been writing extensively on West Indies cricket for the past 15 years. He will trace the evolution of West Indies cricket through eight chronological periods into which he has divided it, examining the principal developments in each period. The last period is one which he describes as “the era of crisis and challenge” dating back to the loss of world cricket ascendancy to Australia in 1995. The presentation will conclude with an evaluation of three issues, namely, the current state of West Indies cricket, the importance of cricket to the region, and the contribution of the West Indies to international cricket.
McGowan’s four books on West Indian cricket will be available. The publications are: Guyanese in India – West Indies Test Cricket, The 1997 Tour of Pakistan and the Crisis in West Indies Cricket, West Indies Triple Centurions and The Origins and Development of Guyanese Cricket, which was recently published.
The lecture will begin at 5 pm.
