What if there is no agreement on a Chancellor?

Dear Editor,

I read with great interest the decision of Justice Ramlal and the observations of Mr KA Juman-Yassin (07.11.20) I have a few questions on the whole issue of the Chief Justice Carl Singh acting as Chancellor:-

Since his appointment as acting Chancellor was unconstitutional what effect would this have on any action/decision, administrative or otherwise he made during the period?

If there is no agreement between the government and the opposition on the appointment of a Chancellor, what’s next for Carl Singh?

As Chief Justice and acting Chancellor did Justice Carl Singh receive two salaries?

Is there no one else in Guyana or the Caribbean who is suitably qualified to be the Chief Justice or Chancellor of the Judiciary? Is Carl Singh our only choice?

The question that must be asked is why is President Jagdeo dead set on appointing Carl Singh as Chancellor? Was the position promised to him?

It is no secret that Justice Carl Singh was President Bharrat Jagdeo’s choice for Chan-cellor and the opposition were in favour of Justice Claudette Singh for the position of Chief Justice. Let’s not forget that Justice Claudette Singh was treated very poorly by this government. This is one of the reasons we are in the current situation.

The judiciary is in chaos. Although the administration has been embarrassed beyond belief it seems that it is unwilling to have the issue resolved quickly by appointing someone other than Carl Singh.

Yours faithfully,

H Puran
