Gunmen open fire on police vehicle

Gunmen at Riverview, Ruimveldt, last night opened fire on a police vehicle and within a matter of minutes the entire area was cordoned off and crawling with heavily armed ranks.

Reports reaching Stabroek News are that the men opened fire on the vehicle shortly before 9 last night in the street just before the Ruimveldt Police Station. No rank was injured during the brazen assault, this newspaper understands.

When this newspaper arrived on the scene, many curious persons had flocked the scene and ranks were busily carrying out their investigations. As news of the incident spread, more and more police officers arrived at the scene.

Stabroek News saw no visible bullet holes on the vehicle that was said to be involved in the incident.

Residents living close to where the incident occurred were tightlipped but a few recounted hearing rapid gunfire.

The area where the incident occurred is dark and not far from the Demerara River.

Up to press time last night, police were still looking for the gunmen.
