All set for kidney transplant -Ramsammy

Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy says everything is in place for Guyana’s first kidney transplant surgery scheduled for Saturday with the US medical team scheduled to arrive in the country today.

Dr. Rahul Jindal and his team of experts will perform the surgery at the George-town Public Hospital. Ramsammy also pointed out at a press briefing yesterday that all the tests have been positive, adding that the surgery will happen provided nothing changes.

Munesh Mangal, 18, was identified as the patient having the transplant; his donor being his mother.

Back in May Ramsammy broke news that the kidney transplant surgery would be done in Guyana for the first time this month. Prior to this, a number of new services have been offered in the health sector for the first time including open-heart surgery at the Caribbean Heart Institute located at the Georgetown Public Hospi-tal. The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) is also in the process of assisting with a kidney dialysis centre as an increasing number of Guyanese continue to go public with kidney failure stories and the high cost of dialysis.

Additionally, several kidney transplant operations have been done in India.
