Two suspects in a break and enter report in New Amsterdam, Berbice are nursing injuries at the hospital after a businessman pursued and shot them as they fled police custody on Wednesday.

In a press release police said investigations have so far revealed that ranks on mobile patrol operating in the area went to Cumberland, Canje where they arrested a man wanted in relation to a report of break and enter and larceny.

Then, acting on information received about a breakage at Penitentiary Walk, ranks went to the area where they arrested another male suspect who was hiding in a water tank. Subsequently the man fled from the vehicle assaulting a police corporal and the businessman in his bid to escape.

The businessman, who is a licensed firearm holder, discharged three rounds at the fleeing suspect, shooting him in the right knee. In the process the other suspect was shot in his groin.

According to the statement, the businessman was subsequently admitted to the same hospital and is under police guard.
