The proprietors of Sam’s bakery on Prince William Street Plaisance were left minus their days’ earnings when two armed bandits robbed the bakery last night.

Around 8 pm the bakery’s owners were closing off sales and preparing goods for the next day when the bandits walked in “quite ordinary” and walked out with an undisclosed sum of money representing yesterday’s takings.

When Stabroek News visited the premises last evening the four persons who were present during the robbery were recounting what had happened. “We didn’t believe it was a robbery, everything happened so quickly,” one of the women said. She was sitting on a bench outside when the two robbers, who she said appeared very young, walked in. One of them placed the gun at her side while the other walked into the shop and proceeded to order the man and woman inside to hand over the money. He collected the cash and picked up a cell phone on the way out also. This woman said that she thought it was a young man she knew from down the road making jokes with her.

One of the owners who did not want to give her name told Stabroek News that she was leaning over the counter talking to two other women outside when the bandits came in and went about their business without much fuss. The woman said that everyone was shocked and “trancelike” not reacting to the guns pointed at them.

The men then walked out as they came in and walked up the street to the public road where a car was parked. They fired one gunshot in the air as they were leaving. “Who gon run behind them then,” one woman said. The Sparendaam Police Station is not too far away from Prince William Street.

The police were informed and were taking statements when this newspaper arrived, some two hours after the incident.
