Digicel yesterday observed World AIDS Day by donating more than $2 million to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) committed to the fight against HIV and AIDS in Guyana. Lifeline Counselling Services and Hope Foundation received $1 million each from the company at Lifeline’s Lamaha Street location. Both NGOs received similar amounts last year and while Lifeline’s was used to provide support for 300 orphans and vulnerable children, Hope Foundation’s was used in awareness programmes and nutritional support for persons and families infected with the virus in Region Seven. Chief Executive Officer of the company’s Guyana branch, Gregory Dean, was on hand to make the presentation and he urged the business community to redouble their support to the HIV and AIDS fight so that together they can form a coalition with others in society to guarantee the delivery of effective programmes to stop the spread of the virus and care for the affected and infected. Digicel’s Santa Claus was also on hand to distribute sweets to the children at Lifeline’s day care and in this photograph a little girl receives some sweets from Santa.
