We need more dedicated teachers

Dear Editor,

Our country needs wisdom that will prevent more grief, destroying a nation already in mourning.

Our educational system needs more teachers (those born for this noble profession) instead of seekers (those trying to make ends meet). Times are hard in Guyana and most people will go for any job just to survive.

However I beg my fellow Guyanese to be sure that they are born to teach before they enter the teaching profession. A teacher can help reverse the destiny of a child, thereby, allowing another Martin Carter to breathe in our land.

A teacher sees the Frank Worrell in a boy and enjoys the patience of nurturing such talent. A teacher pulls out the scientific genius in a child, who may be troublesome but has the skills to surpass.

I encourage my fellow Guyanese who know that they are seekers, to plan wisely and leave the teaching profession; don’t leave during the term but at the end of the term and save our nation.

At Matt 18:6 Jesus said “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones — it was better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck.” This verse is applicable to the teaching profession.

Yours faithfully,

Mahadeo Singh
