Dear Editor,
I am not a political scientist nor have I ever studied politics but over these many years I have observed that no political party which wins an election with a clear majority ever shares any of its powers with the loser. The only time there is power sharing is when there is no clear winner, then a coalition government is formed with shared responsibility.
We had a PNC-UF Coalition and now in Pakistan – Nawaz Sharif and Bhutto’s widower, Asif Ali Zardari who has led her Pakistan People’s Party together with the small Pakistan Nationalist Party have agreed to work together.
Having regard to the above, it boggles my mind that our opposition parties are continuing to call for shared governance. There is no way our PPP will share government with any other party and I cannot understand why our opposition parties have not come to grips with the really of our situation.
What to me is as clear as day is that all four wheels of the present government have come off. Even their staunchest supporters have become totally disillusioned with their lack of performance.
What bothers me the most, however, is the lack of understanding on the part of the opposition parties that unless they have a “shared opposition,” a collation of the opposition, they will never be able to get rid of the P.P.P. They will never be able individually to break the back of the racial politics which infests our society. They will never be able to get the mainstream Indian voter to vote for a perceivably black people’s party. The image of Corbin and Alexander is a deterrent to them.
Unless the opposition can present a leadership of a very multiracial grouping, we are doomed. Please, please let us have a shared opposition.
