Members of the GDF should speak up as Gerry Gouveia has done

Dear Editor,

Captain Gerry Gouveia’s recent statement concerning the Lindo Creek murders, demonstrated the loyalty and independence of thought that is a hallmark of the best military institutions. It is a pity that none of the Guyanese graduates from these, some of whom are now retired, have not seen it fit to emulate Captain Gouveia. Loyalty to the force takes precedence over political affiliations or sympathy to a political party.

Those former senior members of the force who have seen it fit to remain silent while unfounded accusations are hurled at the Guyana Defence Force, should remember Shakespeare’s Henry V speech prior to the Battle of Agincourt (1415). Henry V’s “Band of Brothers” is as relevant today as it was 592 years ago. The ‘Band of Brothers’ theme was epitomized in a book of the same name by Stephens E Ambrose, and a mini TV series depicting the exploits of a United States paratroop unit during the second world war was made. Members of the Guyana Defence Force (serving and non-serving) are a ‘Band of Brothers.’

Henry V’s speech, delivered on a rainy day on the muddy fields of Agincourt on Saint Crispin’s Day, speaks of loyalty and camaraderie among men of war. Today, five-and-a-half centuries later, former men and officers of a modern army are silent, as men now-a-bed, who have never enjoyed the beauty and vigour of military service, find it prudent to cast aspersions on the Guyana Defence Force. By their silence, they contribute to the tarnishing of their pips and crowns.

Yours faithfully,
C V Vaughn MSM
