Shocked at Geneiva’s brutal demise

Dear Editor,
Nothing made me so furious on October 11, 2008 to read via Stabroek News about Geneiva Henry whose body was found on the parapet in close proximity to the Brickdam Presbytery.

Over the years, it was my choice to acknowledge her as a senior citizen who would spend most of her time during the day sitting on the pavement, very harmless and when I could, I would offer whatever is available with the hope that she would make the best of it.
On a personal note, I don’t think that she was a beggar, for not one moment over the years did she ever stretch her hand and request anything, but it was always my choice to stop and ask of her well-being.

From what I know, the pavement was her sanctuary and the Brickdam Church played a major role for she was well known to staff members and parishioners.
It is indeed a shock to learn of her demise which was brutal and it is my only wish that her soul rests peacefully.
Whether one is homeless or not, I guess that we all have got to watch our backs for every class and creed seems to be prey to notorious elements in society.

I don’t expect anyone to agree with me on this, but it’s time to start protecting one’s self in whatever manner is chosen.
Yours faithfully,
T. Pemberton
