Cubana monument should have been addressed long ago

Dear Editor,
Reference is made to the news item Gov’t to finance Cubana monument –Finance Minister SN 2008/10/17
Again, like the Santa Rosa school toilet fiasco, I really do not care who erects the monument or where. The point is that the government, or what masquerades as one, has been prompted to critically look at an issue that should have been addressed a long time before and are even now taking responsibility for its funding, although it appears that their action is being taken solely to prevent any intervention by another political party.

My view, however, does not in any way exonerate the Mayor and City Council from criticism for their tardiness in addressing the erection of a monument in memory of the students killed by terrorists. A proper study should have been done to identify all stakeholders and have them involved in the process and rationalization of site selection and, if necessary, funding.

If working hand in glove with the government, even though the two entities might not care much for each other, means that the people will receive a good, if not high level of governance by all levels in the administration of the country, then working together should be the order of the day.

And stop the nit picking; most of the people are suffering while you guys are fighting among yourselves.
Now that we have recognized that the government will only spring into action if/when development is attempted by other than the government, we should indeed have more attempts at doing what is critical for maintaining the infrastructure, protecting our borders and Guyanese citizens, and ensuring that residents are provided with modern, up-to-date methods, technology and resources, and most of all a government that cares about everyone’s well-being.
Yours faithfully,
Richard Lewis
