Dear Editor,

It was with disgust that I read of Mr Corbin’s utterances on Mr Vincent Alexander’s resignation from the Local Government Task Force (SN 7.12.08).  Mr Corbin, instead of thanking Mr Alexander for his years of service to the party and wishing him well resorted to wild, personal attacks.

Mr Alexander has given eight years of service to the task force on behalf of the PNCR without any monetary benefits. He has given a number of years to the PNC, serving in various capacities, without any monetary benefits. How can Mr Corbin without shame now suggest that this man who is one of the most knowledgeable persons in Guyana on local government is only interested in serving when monetary rewards are given?

This is one of the reasons why I have lost all respect I had for Mr Corbin as a leader. He has never been able to take the high ground and operate above the fray, and has continuously brought the office of Leader of the Party into disrepute.  Mr Alexander was able to show that regardless of his political differences with Mr Corbin, he was capable of putting that aside and recently attended a press conference with Mr Corbin to discuss what was taking place in the local government reform process, and continued to serve even after being vilified by the party.

We have seen the way President-elect Obama went about naming members of his cabinet, selecting some of those who opposed him because he feels they are capable of making a contribution and putting what is good for his country first.  Mr Corbin is a far cry from an Obama, but at least he can pretend.

It has been over six months now since there has been a vacancy at GECOM due to the death of Commissioner Lloyd Joseph. Mr Corbin as Leader of the Opposition has made no effort to have this vacancy filled, but now he calling on Vincent Alexander to resign. This action shows clearly how vindictive and shallow Mr Corbin is. He clearly does not have the people of this country at heart.

Yours faithfully,
Julianne Gaul
