Gunmen on Saturday robbed a businessman of jewellery worth $6M and money while he was making a purchase at a Saffon Street store.

The bandits fired several shots as they escaped in Ramesh Bhagoo’s vehicle but it was later recovered in Le Repentir cemetery. Police, in a press release said that the incident occurred at about 4pm on Saturday. Bhagoo, a Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara businessman was attacked and robbed by two men, who were armed with guns.

The police said that investigations revealed that Bhagoo had stopped at a store to make a purchase when he was confronted by the two men who held him up and drove away in his motor vehicle PGG 4411 which contained jewellery worth $6 million and an undisclosed sum of cash. While escaping the men discharged several rounds which damaged motor vehicle PLL 752 that was parked in the vicinity, the police said.

The statement asserted that acting quickly on the report, law enforcement officers were able to recover the vehicle at Le Repentir cemetery and conducted a cordon and search operation in order to locate the two perpetrators. However, no arrest was made.
