-PRO and Clerk of  Markets also in the dark

One of the owners of the three stalls that were dismantled by the Mayor and City Council last Wednesday is furious over the action  taken by the municipality.

Enrico Greaves, owner of one of the dismantled stalls located in the Vendors Arcade, told Stabroek News in a telephone interview that the demolition exercise was a surprise to him.

Expressing his dissatisfaction to this newspaper over the manner in which the exercise was done by City Hall, the frustrated Greaves said that he has no idea  why the stalls were torn down. He said that he has been operating at that location in excess of 10 years and has never encountered any such problem.

According to him, his rental-of-stall payments were all up to date.

“I pay my stall rentals on time, I don’t have a problem suh I really don’t know why dey break down me stall. Nobody ain’t telling me nothing an I need some answers,” the phone card vendor related.

Meanwhile, when contacted by Stabroek News for a comment on the issue, Public Relations Officer of City Hall, Royston King said that the stalls were dismantled without his knowledge.

Clerk of Markets Schulder Griffith has also expressed surprise, noting that he was unaware of the dismantling exercise, particularly since according to his records, the affected stall holders had unblemished payment records.

Both King and Griffith have said that the matter will be investigated.

When asked the purpose for the demolition exercise at the scene on Wednesday last, a City Constable with whom Stabroek News spoke said that she could not say why they were sent to tear the stalls apart but she stated that they were just executing orders given to them by City Hall.
