Nineteen-year-old Wilford Heyligar, whose body was found in a trench in North Ruimveldt last Sunday morning, died as a result of drowning even though his body bore a gunshot wound to the face.

Heyligar, who was once a member of the Second Infantry Battalion Reserve but had left the unit in 2008, was last seen last week Wednesday the same day the police had a shoot-out apparently with him.

Last Wednesday morning the police had discharged a volley in a desperate bid to capture a man who was said to have shot at them and it was believed that the man escaped into Lamaha Park.

However, from all indications while the man may have been attempting to escape into Lamaha Park when he succumbed as he attempted to cross the trench and his body remained there ever since.
Heyligar’s body was positively identified by his relatives last Monday. His mother had said at the time that he was staying at a family friend in Dem Amstel. The friend had reported on Wednesday that a friend of his picked him up and indicated that they were travelling to Berbice but he never made it to the Ancient County. The family friend said she called his number repeatedly but got no answer and it was Sunday she was called and told that his body might have been found.
