A tasteless campaign

Dear Editor,
Banks DIH is no doubt one of Guyana’s longest standing corporate citizens, but they had a recent series of advertisements in which beer drinkers celebrated the taxes which their purchases of beer (and other Banks DIH products like rum?) contribute to Government taxes.
The alcohol industry around the world thrives on the abuse of alcohol.

More consumption perversely means more taxes, and it is sickening when we know that alcohol has cost way more in lives and livelihoods lost.
Has Guyana gone so bizarre that we are supposed to put dollar values on the lives lost to alcohol consumption? Are we never supposed to balance the government taxes paid by the alcohol industry with the cost to Guyana overall?

Banks DIH has unleashed its tasteless campaign on the public. I hope that the people who are concerned about this recent Banks DIH campaign get to use the same media to respond.

Does Guyana really need a campaign asking men to drink more to contribute to the government coffers?
Yours faithfully,
Vidyaratha Kissoon
