Lethem needs attention

Dear Editor,
With the much anticipated, long overdue opening of      the Guyana-Brazil Bridge, Lethem is in a state of disarray. Lethem has been dubbed a fast developing community. But questions remain concerning the situation there.

There is no proper infrastructure and drainage, and dust pollution is a huge problem. Road construction has started and that is good. But the first phase of the road was done at a back street where there is no major business.

Then there is the boasting of the new “state of the art” hospital. Well, at the moment, it has lost its “art,” because it is still standing as an unused monument despite being handed over to the region, as I understand it.

I am told that there are still electrical and other defects. If you were to take a walk at 1:00hrs when the power company goes off, to the old, dilapidated hospital you would see it in darkness, save for a few lamps.

There is no stand-by generator, and only heaven knows how the doctors and nurses do their work. There is a sign posted at the main gate saying vehicles are not allowed entry except in an emergency.

There in no such sign at any other hospital, public or private. As a layman, how am I going to determine what is an emergency or not? The public treats virtually every illness/injury as an emergency. It is time for the Ministers of Local Government, Health and Amerindian Affairs to deal with these issues promptly; the onus is on them to help this community.
Yours faithfully,
