Citizens have to help make our roads safe

Dear Editor,

The unfortunate fate which met Minister within the Ministry of Education, Ms Desrey Fox and her family a few days ago is very sad. As I read of the incident I could only think of how we, as a nation, need to be more cautious, careful and generally responsible on how we use our roads. Just a few weeks ago we lost six persons to an accident on the Mahaica road; my condolences to the families of those persons and a speedy recovery to the injured.

I believe that we have to do more to ensure that our roads are safe. This responsibility is not only a government one; the onus lies with all of us to ensure that we help to educate ourselves and others on good road use. As passengers we have a right to speak up against speeding, overloading and other examples of hazardous road use. We need to inform ourselves about when to give the right of way to vehicles making emergency runs; we, the citizens, have to help to make our roads safe. There is obviously more that the Police Traffic Department can do but we must also take some responsibility.

I wish Minister Fox a speedy recovery and trust that she will be able to come out of this accident ready and able to resume her official duties. I also pray that the child and other passengers injured will recover soon.

Yours faithfully,
Lurlene Nestor
