Several city buildings deemed fire hazards

According to an advertisement by the ministry, placed in Wednesday’s edition of Kaieteur News, the buildings were inspected by the Guyana Fire Service during last year, found to be in a state of disrepair and were deemed fire hazards. As a result, a report was submitted to the Fire Advisory Board and the City Engineer’s Department of the Mayor and City Council for appropriate action.

Buildings on Robb Street; Princes Street, Lodge; Norton Street; Barrack and High streets; George Street, Werk-en-Rust; Globe Yard located at Waterloo and Church streets; Company Path, South Cummingsburg; Lombard and Broad streets, and High Street were found to be fire hazards.

The ministry quoted Section 5 of the Fire Prevention Act, Chapter 22:01 of the Laws of Guyana which states: “The Chief Fire Officer or any inspector may, on any weekday between the hours of eight of the clock in the forenoon and four of the clock of the afternoon, and at such other times as he may determine, enter and inspect any premises for the purpose of ascertaining whether, by reason of the condition or construction of such premises, or by reason of any other condition existing on such premises (including any manufacturing or other process carried on in such premises), there is a danger of an outbreak of fire.”
